National Bal Swachhta Mission

Introduction

The National Bal Swachhta Mission or what is commonly known as NBSM was launched and implemented on 14th November, 2014 by the Union minister of women and child development. This Bal Swachhta Mission is very much a part of the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ launched by the prime minister of India 2nd October, 2014. According to the Union Minister of women and Child Development the children plays a very important role in the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’.

According to her the children can also become the ambassadors of this ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and can inspire others to keep the houses, schools and the surrounding areas clean. According to her the habit of cleanliness must be imbibed in the children with the help of poems, conversations and also with short stories and other interesting and interactive activities.

The scheme has some of the following themes: –

  • Clean Anganwadis
  • Clean surroundings. For example the playgrounds and the roads and the streets must be clean.
  • Clean self. This specifically stresses on the personal hygiene.
  • Clean food.
  • Clean drinking water.
  • Clean toilets.

As a matter of fact, during the National Bal Swachhta week from 14th to 19th November, the above mentioned themes were celebrated in each and every Anganwadi center of the state. The women and the child development of the various state governments have been approached specifically to do the National Bal Swachhta Mission with assistance of the school education, drinking water, urban development and the information, sanitation and publicity. All the events are to be organized by the state, district block and by the gram panchayat level.

Objectives of this scheme

The following are the objectives of this scheme: –

  • To have clean Anganwadis in all the states.
  • Having absolutely clean surrounding like the clean school fields for the children and everybody else.
  • Having clean and fresh food in school and elsewhere.
  • To get clean and fresh drinking water. The government has always stressed on the need and the importance of clean and clear drinking water.
  • Clean toilets. This is one of the most important parts of the plan. A host of diseases can be checked if the toilets are clean and clear.
  • All the floors of the Anganwadis should be cemented or laid with tiles.
  • The entire premise of the Anganwadi should be well lit.
  • All the cracks and joints should be immediately checked and repaired.
  • All the spider webs and the other foul elements should be removed and the premise should be clean.
  • The garbage should be deposited in the bins and they are to be cleaned every day.
  • Periodic disposal and removal of the waste materials should be made compulsory.
  • One has to avoid the stagnation of water anywhere near the toilets and the other places. As it will stop the mosquitoes.
  • The waste water from the kitchens of the AWC’s must be disposed properly.
  • One should wash hair regularly. And also must comb hair everyday and inspect the hair for lice.

More objectives

  • Brushing teeth every morning and in the night is very important. And also taking bath everyday and washing and changing clothes is a necessary.
  • One must ensure that the water used for washing food products is not contaminated.
  • The water storage tanks and the buckets has to cleaned be periodically.
  • Safe drinking water is ought to be available and kept in containers. Containers with taps can be used for this purpose.
  • All the toilet has to be cleaned every morning and after the children leave and must be kept tidy at all times.
  • There should be adequate number of soaps and also water should be present at convenient places in the toilet.
  • The water supply for the toilet should be regular.
  • One must always check for leaky taps.
  • In the schools and other similar places the child friendly toilets are mostly required so that the children can use them without any hassle.

  • All the government schools are very much eligible for this scheme. As a matter of fact the government has stresses on the role of the children in this scheme of the government.
  • With the help of the state government and the gram panchayat the central government can make this scheme work.
  • All the anganwadis of all the state around the country are eligible for this scheme.
  • This mission is eligible for the state, district and the gram panchayt level.

With the help of this scheme the government has tried to make the implementation the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ at a very grass hood level.
